Skills Challenge

Liam Byrne MP (Regional Minister for the West Midlands) has set the following challenge to all (140) public service employers in the region:

Give a lead to the wider employer community and accelerate the regeneration of your local communities by signing up to the Government’s Jobs and Skills Pledge.

Make a commitment over the next three years (2007 to 2010) to:

  • Upskill your workforce to a minimum of Level 2 as part of a wider organisational development programme linked to your public service improvement plans and wider public service reforms.
  • Tackle the basic skills needs of any employees who lack essential literacy, numeracy and communications skills.
  • Prioritise the recruitment of local people from the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods and communities.
  • Substantially increase the number of young people (16-25 year olds) employed in public services through a high-quality Apprenticeship programme.
